Hryhorii Svitlytskyi (1872-1948) is a Ukrainian painter, professor, musician, violinist, composer. Born in Kyiv. Studied at M. Murashko's Kyiv School of Drawing (1889-1893) with M. Pymonenko, H. Platonov, and M. Vrubel; at St. Petersburg`s Art Academy (1893-1900) with I. Riepin, M. Kuznetsov, worked in the workshop of A. Kuindzhi. He helped in the work on the ornaments of the Volodymyr Cathedral, participated in the restoration of the painting of the Assumption Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, participated in the painting of St. Isaac's Cathedral. Exhibited in the Society of Watercolorists (since 1908), the Society of Artists named after K. Kostandi (since 1916), the Society of Mobile Art Exhibitions (since 1918). Member of the Ukrainian Art Association (since 1929). Taught at Kyiv Art Institute (since 1947). Became the first People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1946). The house-museum of the artist was opened in Kyiv (1958) and the street was named (1961). Lived and worked in Kyiv.
