Hryhorii Svitlytskyi. Poetics of the Ukrainian symbol
Hryhoriy Svitlytskyi - Ukrainian painter, professor, musician, violinist, composer. Having graduated from Mykola Murashko's Kyiv School of Drawing, and later from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, Svitlytskyi belonged to the galaxy of artists who, at the beginning of the 20th century, took part in the process of formation and development of the Ukrainian school of painting. The artist was the first in Ukraine to receive the title of People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR. The famous landscape painter Arkhip Kuindzhi had a significant influence on the young artist. Their acquaintance later developed into a strong friendship and played an exceptional role in the creative development of the artist. At one time, Svitlytskyi worked in Kuindzhi's workshop.
Svitlytsky felt nature in a particularly subtle way, and this skill became a key factor in the master's work. His melodic and poetic landscapes are considered to be filled with symbols of the Ukrainian people - thatched cottages, churches, inns, fences and windmills. However, the artist goes further and fills these symbols with life, a kind of spirit of the place, which is easily read by the viewer. It is not for nothing that Hryhoriy Svitlytskyi is considered one of the outstanding Ukrainian masters of light painting. Having developed his own paint technology, he masterfully and uniquely conveyed light and color in his works, be it landscapes, portraits, still lifes or genre paintings. Thanks to his unique perception of light, the artist created deep and voluminous paintings full of lyricism.
