Syrotenko Oleksandr

Oleksandr Syrotenko (1897–1975) is a Ukrainian painter and teacher. Born in the village Vorozhba (now a city in the Sumy region). He studied with O. Hoffmann and at the Kyiv Art School (1913-1918) with I. Seleznyov, H. Krushevskyi, M. Strunnikov, H. Dyadchenko, F. Krasytskyi, as well as at the Kyiv Art Institute (1921-1927) with F. Krychevskyi. Graduate student of the Kharkiv Printing Institute (since 1931), assistant of the Kharkiv Art Institute (since 1932). Member of the Association of Artists of Red Ukraine (1928–1929), the Ukrainian Art Association (1929–1931), the Union of Artists of Ukraine (since 1932). Worked as a teacher at the Kyiv Art Institute (since 1934). Participant in World War II (1941-1942). Teacher of the Ukrainian branch at the Moscow Art Institute in evacuation in the city of Samarkand (1942-1944). After the war, he returned to Kyiv to work at the Kyiv Art Institute, where he received the title of professor in 1947. He taught until 1969. Among his students: O. Lopukhov, V. Odainyk, T. Golembievska, V. Ryzhykh, V. Hurin and others. For his teaching activity, he was awarded the "Badge of Honor" order and the "For Labor Merit" medal.
