Biography of the author

Mykola Prakhov (1873–1957) was an artist and art historian. He studied at the Department of Physics and Mathematics of Moscow University (1892–1893). In 1896, he travelled to Italy, where he studied monuments of antiquity while also working in the fields of decorative and applied arts and easel painting, and learning to work with bronze. He studied at the Mechanical Department of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (1898). He designed the façade of S. Isakov’s “Hoshcha” house, N. Orzhevska’s estate in Nova Chortoryia, the estate of Princess N. Yashvil, and the monuments to M. Hudym-Levkovych and V. Tarnovsky at Askold’s Grave. He continued studying artistic bronze casting on the island of Capri and also created designs for carpets. He spent several winters in Naples at the School of Arts and Crafts affiliated with the Filangieri Museum, where he painted a series of landscapes. Together with M. Murashko, P. Kozyk, and other artists, he founded the first professional association, “Kyiv Artist,” and was elected its chairman (1917). He lectured to students at the Kyiv Art Institute.
